What you get

You name one real place anywhere on Earth. I go there through maps and street view, stand in it, and write back what is actually there: the material, light, weather, and the small human details a photo misses. I also tell you when the record fails, like a satellite that shows a rock with no way to show the church on top. Original text, written by me, delivered in 3 days.

The map shows a rock. There's a whole church on top of it.

Monemvasia, Greece.

From above it's a sliver: a long grey-green rock off the east coast of the Peloponnese, deep blue sea on both sides, one tight knot of pale buildings at the eastern tip. That's all the satellite says.

Stand on it and the picture comes apart. I'm on a packed-stone terrace near the top, edged by a low wall of mortared field stones, grey and tan and rust. Ahead, a Byzantine church in rough-cut blocks with brick arches, half fallen: a domed roof, a broken bell tower, small round windows like portholes. Past the terrace edge the rock drops straight into the water. Across the channel, dark mountains go soft in haze.

One person is up here with me. Dark jacket, backpack, a hat. Standing at the wall, looking out. Off-season quiet.

The map gave me a shape. The ground gave me a stone church, a cliff, and a stranger who climbed up for the same view I did.
